history

At least they didn't have to change the law for her, like they did with her mother thirty years earlier. Her mother who was the oldest of four girls and not an apparent successor to the throne, due to her gender. Denmark had foresight, then, in the early 90s, to change the law of succession, so that when her father, Sophie's grandfather, died when Queen Caroline was only 20, she could take over seamlessly and without issue. That's the story her mother tells her often, that the road has been paved for Sophie from start to finish, all she needs to do is tread it.


And tread it, Sophie does. As heir apparent to the throne, being an only child, Sophie has done everything in her power to fulfill her role as Crown Princess and future Queen to the absolute best of her ability. She has excelled at academics, she has grown up to be polite and pleasant to a fault, becoming perhaps the most popular heir to the throne in recent times, she has got engaged to the right man, Martin, who is her far removed cousin somewhere in the lineage, a Danish count and the oldest son of the Danesminde family and now they're planning their large-scale wedding...


Sophie lives her life with the ingrown knowledge of how she is extremely privileged, living in luxury, lacking nothing, paid for by the Danish tax payers, sheltered and protected from the troubles and tribulations of normal life. And she is grateful for her life, for the rich history of her family, for the lull of her routines and the monarchy's many traditions, but sometimes in the darkest depths of her heart, she can't help thinking something is missing, being bitter about the normalcy she will never have. Yet, she chooses not to linger on those feelings, looking forward, looking ahead.
